WiFi Reach

WiFi or wireless fidelity is a wireless technology which is very common now. This technology is now the bread and butter for many users. This wireless access point has helped many people to establish small businesses on their own by simply developing hotspots. However besides opening the horizon of opportunities, it is facing one major limitation relating to its reach and access.

Reason for Limited Coverage

If you think that WiFi is designed to be used only for small networks, you are wrong. WiFi is capable of covering longer distances, but it is facing two major constraints. First limitation is that WiFi signals are spread over the unlicensed spectrum, the signals present in free spectrum are feeble. Hence they cannot travel to longer distances. The second reason is that the WiFi signals have to fight for their share in the air. When any WiFi signal carrying a message reaches the air there are many others who attack over these signals for their share. Hence as a result the signals which are more close to the desired access point get a chance to pass while others wait. This problem can be overcome in the place with lower signals.

Improvement in WiFi Reach

The constraint of wireless signals to far away places is history now. Long range WiFi has been brought to the world as a major replacement for expensive cellular and satellite networks. The initial channel of WiFi operations 802.11 is extended to 802.11 a/g now. This has allowed this broadband technology an extension in OFDM mode from 10 MHz to 5 MHz. the WiFi signals can also be strengthen using range extended amplifiers. The use of such amplifiers gives more power strength to the existing WiFi antennas. Another solution to WiFi signal spread is to use special shaped antennas. These especially designed antennas provide signal transmission using a thin beam, covers an area of several kilometers. The signal is so strong that it can even encounter the meddling sources .Another viable solution to the poor signal strength using WiFi technology can be overcome using IEEE 802.11 modified protocol. However this modification can be done by breaking the WiFi connection with the existing devices.

WiFi Routers

The omni directional antennas provide signal strength but they can also limit the radius of the signals and this is because sometimes they do not allow signal's access in one particular direction. This deficiency can be overcome using wifi routers. The routers which provide greater WiFi signal strength provides a faster access to devices in order to connect. The 802.11n is considered reliable and provides higher bandwidth. The standard wifi antennas are also used to increase the signal strength and the speed of the connection. Now there are many user friendly devices which can extend the range and efficiency of WiFi. Other smart antennas and range extenders can also simplify the job. Here it should be noted that range extenders can increase the coverage of wireless signals but at the same time it is really difficult to receive error free bandwidth. Hence it is essential to locate your range extender within the reach of the WiFi router. The signals are attuned due to the physical and other barriers. The w ifi signals are attuned by not only physical barriers like walls and window glass but also with the presence of microwaves, walkie talkie and other signals. Hence the best range extenders are those which are of the same brand as your router is. The reason is that the two devices made by the same company are manufactured using same technology. Power line adapters are another solution for extending the range of WiFi signals.
